Muslim Mental Health Champions

A transformative community initiative focused on leading, supporting and empowering Muslim mental health

Muslim Mental Health Champions (MMHC) is a faith-informed training and community initiative developed by SLM Wellbeing, an NCFE-approved learner centre. The programme combines structured learning, practical skill development, and ongoing community support to strengthen mental health responses within Muslim contexts.

The initiative brings together training, community, and continuity, supporting individuals not only to learn, but to remain connected, supported, and guided beyond qualification.

The Programme

The MMHC programme is delivered as a Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Muslim Mental Health, accredited by NCFE CACHE (Ofqual regulated awarding body).

The programme integrates:

  1. Islamic psychology, professional skills, tools, and strategies
  2. Faith-aligned mental health understanding, grounded in Islamic values and contemporary practice
  3. Structured learning, alongside reflective and applied approaches
  4. Community and continuity, through a pathway into ongoing membership, peer connection, supervision, and professional guidance
  5. Sustained development, equipping learners with competence and a platform to support mental health challenges within Muslim contexts

Why It Is Needed

Mental health needs of Muslims are often misunderstood and overlooked. As wellbeing spaces have become increasingly secular, cultural and religious relevance is harder to identify, contributing to stigma, reduced accessibility, and a disconnect from spiritually affirming approaches.

The MMHC programme responds by:

  • Enhancing understanding through a faith-aligned framework

  • Addressing unmet needs while reducing stigma and improving accessibility

  • Bridging gaps between community realities and mainstream training, workplaces, and services

  • Improving outcomes, particularly for those who are vulnerable or living in deprived areas

Who is it for?

  • Professionals and volunteers working in pastoral, support, and care roles

  • Individuals with a strong interest in mental health and spiritual wellbeing

  • Those working in, or aspiring towards, community development and leadership

  • Anyone seeking a deeper understanding of mental health from an Islamic perspective to support themselves and others

Delivery Format

Learning is delivered through 90 guided learning hours plus 35 hours of non-class work. Teaching is highly interactive and primarily in person, combining reflective exercises, applied learning, and assessment designed to strengthen understanding of both theory and practice.

Dates & Location

Course dates and cohorts are published on our website, with the programme running at various points throughout the year.

The programme is delivered primarily in person, providing a supportive and interactive learning environment, with venues confirmed ahead of each cohort.
